Regular Paper Special Sessions

In addition to the CMMR topics listed in the Call for Papers, we are hosting the special sessions detailed below, designed to encourage more focused contributions.

To submit your paper to a special session, select its title as your primary subject area on the CMT submission page.

Human Auditory Ecology: Minds, Milieux, Machines & Musics

Session organisers: Dr Etienne Thoret (CNRS Institut de Neurosciences de la Timone) and Dr Vincent Lostanlen (Nantes Laboratory of Digital Sciences)

This session focuses on Human Auditory Ecology, an interdisciplinary field that investigates the reciprocal dynamics between humans and their acoustic environments. It examines how sonic environments shape human perception, behavior, culture and musics, while also considering how auditory perception—supported by computational models—can be used to analyze and characterize ecological settings.

We invite contributions exploring how people perceive, interpret, and interact with soundscapes across natural, urban, virtual and musical contexts. Relevant topics include soundscape analysis and ecological monitoring through auditory-inspired models, the role of environmental acoustics in health and social life, and cross-cultural and anthropological approaches to listening and musics. Work addressing bioacoustic parallels between human and non-human listeners, and research at the intersection of auditory neuroscience, computational ecology, and sound design, are also welcome.

This session aims to advance understanding of the dynamic, mutual shaping of humans and their sonic environments by bridging perspectives from auditory science, ecology, anthropology, and musical studies.
